Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp says that his star winger Mohamed Salah has diminished chances of winning the Ballon d’Or next month, adding that he knows nothing about the contract renewal for the Pharaohs skipper.

The 29-year-old Salah was named in a 30-man shortlist on 8 October for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, but Klopp believes that the club's trophyless 2020/21 season could negatively affect the chances of his Egyptian star.

"I have no idea how you win the Ballon d’Or – if it is about being in a Champions League final and scoring goals then it might be difficult. But if it’s about performances over several years, then yes," Klopp said in the Atletico Madrid pre-match press conference on Monday.

Salah finished among the top five when the Ballon d’Or award was last handed out in 2019, with last year's prize cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool did not win any titles in 2021, finishing a disappointing third in the Premier League, and the team was also eliminated from the Champions League quarter-final.

Salah narrowly missed out on the Premier League's top scorer award last season after finishing with 22 goals, just one behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

However, he made a blistering start to the current season, scoring 10 goals in as many appearances in all competitions, including seven in the Premier League.

Salah, whose current contract runs till the end of the 2022/23 season, said on Thursday he is solely focused on the club's bid for silverware amid talk of a potential contract renewal.

“I don’t know, we will see," Klopp said when asked about Salah's contract renewal situation.

The winners of the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League season, Liverpool will be facing Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in the third round of the prestigious tournament group stage.
