Ahram Online , Wednesday 8 Dec 2021

Egyptian mezzo-soprano Gala El-Hadidi will give an early Christmas concert at the Cairo Opera House’s Small Hall, where she will perform a selection of Christmas carols and other classical works.

Gala El-Hadidi

El-Hadidi, who is known for performing songs from well-known operas, operettas and musicals by Rossini, Mozart, Bizet, Strauss, Lehár, Bernstein and Loewe, will be accompanied by renowned Scottish pianist Greig Martin.

The Germany-based El-Hadidi, whose Christmas concert is the latest of her regular performances in Egypt, was the first Egyptian to ever perform Carmen internationally. She made her debut at the age of 17 on the main stage of the Cairo Opera House, one year before signing a contract with the Opera House to become the youngest soloist ever at the company.

El-Hadidi studied with tenor Sobhi Bidair, Tom Krause in Finland and Marylin Horne in the US, as well as at the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart. She has worked with famous conductors including Christian Thielemann and with singers Juan-Diego Florez, Waltraud Meier and Evelyn Herlitzius, performing on stages including the Berlin Philharmonic, Stuttgart Liederhalle, Auditorio Nacional di Madrid, Kennedy Center and Cadogan Hall in London.

Co-founder of the Bartholdy Trio, Martin has been a repetiteur with the Cairo Opera Company since the opening of the Cairo Opera House in 1989.
