MENA , Saturday 22 Jan 2022

The Arab League supports any move by the UN and its Security Council to push the peace process forward in the Middle East and establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, said Maged Abdel-Fattah, the permanent representative of the Arab League to the UN.

Speaking during a session on the Middle East at the Security Council on Saturday, the Arab League official called on the Security Council to benefit from the efforts of the Quartet on the Middle East (the European Union, UN, US, and Russia) to launch direct negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, which would help hold an international peace conference.

Abdel-Fattah urged the Security Council to provide protection for the unarmed Palestinian people against the Israeli authorities and armed settlers and to provide the maximum support to Palestinian refugees in hosting countries through UNRWA.

He called for intensitying reconstruction efforts following the Israeli attacks against the Palestinian people in May 2021, which left more than 250 people dead. The official urged support for the Palestinians' efforts to achieve national reconciliation and hold elections in the nearest time possible.

Many developments have taken place since the new Israeli government assumed office in 2021, raising the need for effective and strict action by the Security Council, Abdel-Fattah pointed out.
