The accident took place on the new international road, around 25 kilometres from the coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh, reported Ahram Arabic news website.

The cause of the crash remains unclear.

As many as 17 ambulances and civil protection personnel were dispatched to the accident site to transfer the injured and victims’ bodies to Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital.

The public prosecution was notified to investigate the incident.

Egypt, which used to see deadly road accidents on a near-daily basis, has witnessed a steady decline in the number of road accidents over the past years in parallel with national efforts to improve the country’s road network through the National Road Project launched in 2014.

The project has successfully developed and extended Egypt’s 23,500 km road network and has constructed and/or upgraded 7,000 km of highways as part of the project.

When it was launched, Egypt had ranked 118th in terms of the quality of its road infrastructure in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report. By 2019, it had climbed to 28th place.

The country reported a drop of 28.9 percent in road traffic injuries and 8.9 percent in deaths in 2020 compared to the previous year, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said in a report issued in November 2021.
