The US-based ride hailing company has increased the fare prices for some of its services in Egypt on Monday due to a fuel price hike.

"We had to revise fare pricing on the app with a slight adjustment in light of the new record-high fuel prices drivers are facing whilst ensuring that millions of riders can continue to move around cities safely and affordably," the email sent to their clients which Al-Ahram Online received said.

The base fare for an average UberX ride in Cairo has been raised from EGP 8 to EGP 8.5, and the price per kilometre has been raised to EGP 2.9 from EGP 2.8.

The base fare for an average UberX saver rose to EGP 7.25 from EGP 6.8, and the price per kilometre to EGP 2.47 from EGP 2.38.

For an UberX ride in Alexandria, the new base fare costs EGP 8.3, up from EGP 8, with EGP 3 per kilometre up from the previous EGP 2.9.

The base fare for an average UberX Saver has been raised to EGP 7.1 from EGP 6.8, with EGP 2.55 per kilometre up from the previous EGP 2.46.

Egypt's Fuel Automatic Pricing Committee raised in mid April fuel prices for various octanes by EGP 0.25 per litre – while keeping the price of diesel and mazut for strategic industries fixed – for the second quarter of the year amid a global rise in oil prices.

Uber raised the prices of its UberX and UberX Saver in Cairo and Alexandria in August following the rise of fuel prices in Egypt, then cut the UberX fare in Cairo in January in response to competition from new competitors DiDi and Indriver.
