Palestinian young singer, producer, and songwriter Nai Barghouti dedicated her latest patriotic song and music video, ‘Nasheed El-Ard’ (‘Anthem of the Land’), to the memory of Shireen Abu Akleh.

“O my land, the land of goodness, the land of exile and tents, my people are singing despite the injustice, O my land, the land of peace,” chants the standard Arabic (Fusha) powerful lyrics of Ous Shahin.

Anthem of the Land was released last week to mark the 74th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba.

The song echoes demonstrations that erupted on Nakba Day across several parts of the occupied lands of Palestine following high tensions over the killing of 51-year-old Al-Jazeera iconic reporter Abu Akleh, who was shot dead on Wednesday 11 May during an Israeli raid in Jenin.

The Anthem of the Land’s music video features a march led by Barghouti and Palestinians from different ages merged with footage from the funeral of the Palestinian journalist that was interrupted by a violent Israeli police raid.

The Nakba, or ‘catastrophe’, refers to the 1948 establishment of the state of Israel on the former British mandate of Palestine.

Boosted by an enthusiastic choir, the Barghout orchestral-oriental composition and arrangement also features ADAM strings Quartet and Nymphéas Trombone Quartet as well as bassist Ella Stensted and percussionist Martijn Boom.

The Palestinian singer is currently gearing up for a performance in the Netherlands that is scheduled for 4 June and will also include performances by Le Trio Joubran and Dhafer Youssef.

Born in Ramallah in 1996, the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam graduate is known for merging Arab traditional scales with Western classical and jazz harmony and arrangements, proving her excellent talents since she launched her career in 2011.

Performing in a few important venues across the globe, Barghouti won the Royal Concertgebouw’s Young Talent Award in Amsterdam in 2020.

The young star released her first original album early this year titled ‘Nai 1.’

The killing of Shireen Abu Akleh by Israeli occupation forces has been condemned by many countries and international entities, including the UN Security Council, the EU, religious leaders, as well cultural institutes and personas worldwide.
