The crime of premeditated murder is punishable by the death penalty in Egypt.

The prosecution also detained the man who claimed he witnessed the crime as a suspect in the case pending investigation.

The Ministry of Interior announced on Thursday that they had arrested the husband in Suez city less than a week after the prosecution found the body of the victim.

The husband had earlier reported that Gamal went missing in front of a commercial complex in 6 October city in Giza.

Relatives of the victim said she disappeared from the complex after being last seen in the company of her husband.

On Monday, the prosecution announced that the body of the TV presenter was found after a man – who claimed that he was close to the victim’s husband – willingly offered his testimony to the prosecution.

The man said he witnessed the crime and claimed that the husband killed Gamal over differences between them. He informed the prosecution of the place where Gamal's body was buried.

The prosecution said it obtained authorisation from the judicial authority, which employs the husband, to lift his immunity and take measures against him, the statement said without naming the authority.

Gamal was known for her programme El-Moshagheba (The Troublemaker) on LTC TV satellite channel.

She also worked for Al-Hadath Al-Youm satellite channel.
