Omar Khairat to close 30th Citadel Festival for Music and Singing

Egyptian composer Omar Khairat and his orchestra conducted by Naayer Nagui will perform a concert at the historic Citadel of Salah Al-Din on 31 August to close the 30th Citadel Festival for Music and Singing.

Khairat, 73, a world-renowned musician, has hundreds of compositions in his repertoire.

He composed musical scores for numerous films and television series, including The Sixth Day (1984), The Terrorist (1993), Mafia (2002), Girl’s Love (2003), The Embassy is in the Building (2005), and Deer’s Blood (2006).

Opening on 14 August with a performance by Medhat Saleh, the popular festival will host a total of 42 concerts in 18 nights for affordable EGP 20 tickets.

Organised by the Culture Ministry’s Cairo Opera House in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the festival will see performances by renowned singers like Hany Shaker, Ali El Haggar, Hisham Abbas, Nawal El Zoghbi, Dina El-Wedidi, Mohamed Mohsen, Nouran Abutaleb, Tania Saleh, Nesma Mahgoub, Lena Chamamyan, as well as bands like Cairo Steps, Black Theama, Massar Egbari, and Wust El-Balad, and Sufi chanters like Yassin ElTohamy and El-Hadra Troup., among others.

The Culture Ministry has also announced that they will make a special tribute “for nine personas that contributed to enriching the artistic scene in Egypt and the Arab World”, including musicians such as the late conductor Kamal Helal, violinist Mahmoud Othman, opera singer Mustafa Mohamed, and poet Ibrahim Abdel-Fattah, conductor Mohamed Abdel-Sattar and director Karima Badr.
