This ministerial directive will be implemented as of 1 September 2022.

This comes upon the directions of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to increase the ration support for the neediest families by an amount ranging from EGP 100 to 300 according to the number of family members on the ration card.

The state disburses commodity subsidies to 64 million citizens per month and the reserves of strategic commodities can last for six months, Ahmed Kamal, the official spokesperson for the ministry said.

According to the ministerial directive, the total purchased goods should not exceed the limited balance of the ration card, and the citizen is allowed to get the package of goods according to his needs and no more than five pounds over the limit of the card.

The ministerial directive also affirmed the citizen's right to buy his ration commodities up to a maximum of 4 times a month from ration ports.

In December 2021, Sisi directed the government to stop issuing new subsidy ration cards and limit the number of beneficiaries to two family members per card in order to use savings for long overdue development projects.

The Ministry of Supply has revised the list of citizens eligible to benefit from the subsidy ration card system in the past few years in an effort to streamline operations and ensure that subsidies reach those most in need.

Total food subsidies cost the government EGP 87 billion in the FY2021/2022 budget, according to recent statements by the supply minister.
