Spanning the many halls of the Tahrir Cultural Centre of the American University in Cairo, the festival will showcase a large plethora of animation works from Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and international scene.

The event will include screenings of feature films from Japan, France, Algeria and Italy, and more than 70 short films from Egypt, the MENA region and the world.

More than 15 workshops will take place covering topics such as storyboarding, directing, character design, 3D modelling & rigging, stop motion, puppet animation, voice acting and script treatment.

Animatex will also feature numerous talks and discussions from local professionals and international guest artists.

The full programme is yet to be revealed, however the organisers have already pointed to some highlights.

Numerous international artists will reveal secrets of their work in animation through talks and workshops, among them the American animator Tod Polson will hold a talk titled “Storytelling with Colours,” while Katie Menzies and Abel Reverter from Spain will introduce their journey with the Cabeza Patata studio, which they have founded.

Among the films that have been revealed is a Japanese animated musical film directed by Masaaki Yuasa and titled “Inu-Oh.” The hand-drawn film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival this month, receiving immediate critical acclaim.

Animatex is Egypt’s largest event dedicated to all aspects of animation art.

The festival was founded in 2020 by Youhana Nassif & Samaka Studio with an aim of gathering all animation professionals and everyone who is interested in animation in one place. Apart of screenings of films, talks, workshops and seminars, Animatex is an important platform for the students and professionals to meet, exchange ideas and discover new opportunities in the field.

The detailed programme of the festival’s third edition will be revealed soon.
