Veteran Egyptian author Bahaa Taher dies at 87

Famous Egyptian author and translator Bahaa Taher passed away on Thursday after a long struggle with illness.

Born in 1937 in Giza governorate to a family with roots in Upper Egypt, Taher got a bachelor's degree in history in 1956 and a postgraduate diploma in media from Cairo University.

He worked as a translator at the State Information Service in 1975 then joined the Egyptian State Radio service as a director and broadcaster till 1975

The late author was one of the most prominent members of Egypt's 1960s literary generation.

He has written novels, short story collections and has published translations. He has received several prestigious awards, including the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (known as the Arabic Booker) in 2008 for his novel Sunset Oasis.

His stature as a writer brought his works to the attention of international publishers. Many of his works have been translated, often into several languages.
