12 people killed, 27 injured in collision on Zafarana-Ras Ghareb road

12 people were killed and 27 injured when a bus collided with a heavy transport truck Sunday on the Zafarana-Ras Ghareb road, 40 kilometres north of Ras Ghareb in the Red Sea governorate, authorities reported.

Ambulances transferred the deceased and injured to Ras Ghareb Central Hospital.

The Public Prosecution has been notified and will launch an investigation into the cause of the collision, authorities reported.

In a statement, Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj offered condolences to the families of those affected by the accident, ordering the rapid provision of necessary aid.

The ministry announced the payment of EGP 25,000 to the families of the deceased, with the sum to be doubled to EGP 50,000 in case the deceased was the head of household.

The ministry will also disburse EGP 5,000 to each person injured, according El-Qabbaj.

Egypt has witnessed a continuous decline in the number road accidents due to recent government efforts to improve the country’s road network and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

Traffic injuries dropped by 9.3 percent compared in 2021 compared to 2020 – registering 51,511 in 2021 down from 56,789 in 2020, according to a report released by the country’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) in July 2022.

Although traffic injuries across Egypt dropped in 2021, traffic deaths increased by 15.2 percent, according to the CAPMAS.
