Wed 15, 7-8pm (Online): “Radical Hospitality-American Policy, Media, and Immigration” session of the Gerhart Centre Webinar Series will feature Nour Halabi, assistant professor of media and communication at the University of Leeds. The session will discuss the speaker’s book titled Radical Hospitality: American Policy, Media, and Immigration, which re-imagines the ethical relationship of host societies towards newcomers by applying the concept of hospitality to two specific realms that impact the lives of immigrants in the United States: policy and media. She will present during the session a historical policy and media discourse analysis of immigration regulation and media coverage during three periods of US history: the 1880s and the Chinese Exclusion Act, the 1920s and the National Origins Act and the 2000s and the Muslim travel ban. Sat 11, 7-10pm: “Narrating the Self: A Conversation with Fatima Qandil and Nadia Kamel”, why are today’s readers so eager to hear other people’s stories? And what do these narratives add to our understanding of the reality hidden from us? The talk will reflect on these and other questions in the presence of poet and novelist Fatima Qandil, and director and novelist Nadia Kamel, moderated by professor of English literature Hala Kamal and Sahar El-Mogui, assistant professor of the American Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University.  

Wed 15, 6:30pm-8pm: “Development in a Time of Crisis”,

a discussion by Alfredo Saad Filho, prominent Brazilian economist, Professorial Research Associate at the Department of Development Studies, SOAS University of London, to probe how international development can be thought of at a time of global economic and political crises. It aims to identify limitations in current policies and sketch alternatives to navigate these challenging times.
