“Today we celebrate the incredible women who made Egypt ‘The Hollywood of the Nile’,” writes Film My Design Team under a short video released on Instagram on 8 March.
The video looks briefly at a number of women who contributed to the birth and success of Egyptian cinema: “from Atteyat El Abnoudy, the ‘mother’ of Egyptian documentary making, to Rachida Abdel Salam, who edited 36 films for some of the most celebrated directors, to Assia Dagher, the dean of producers who discovered many artistic talents, and Nahed Nasrallah, the costume designer who started her career as an assistant director to Youssef Chahine.”
The Film My Design is a platform that showcases the design process through film. The FMD also organises the design-film festival. Held in Cairo, it is the only such event in Egypt and the MENA region. The most recent edition of the festival was held in January 2022 at Cairo’s Zawya cinema, with the opening and closing nights of the festival held at the Tahrir Cultural Center and the Design Haus by Esorus respectively.
The FMD’s mission centers on telling inspiring, engaging, and thought-provoking design stories using film; the most universal language of visual storytelling.
