The two top diplomats will discuss issues of mutual concern, including regional issues.

In late February, FM Shoukry visited Damascus to extend a message of solidarity to the Syrian people following the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria leaving thousands dead and more homeless.

It was the first visit by an Egyptian foreign minister to Syria since 2011.

During the visit, FM Shoukry held meetings with his counterpart as well as with Syria’s President Bashar Al-Assad.

In a press conference in Damascus following these meetings, Shoukry stressed that the “Syrian people have a special place to Egyptian people and the purpose of this visit, in the first place, is humanitarian to deliver solidarity at the presidential, governmental and citizen level to the Syrian people amid this tragedy.”

Egypt was the first country to send humanitarian relief to Syria following the devastating earthquake.

A day before Shoukry’s visit to Damascus, the Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament Hanafy El-Gebaly visited Damascus and met with Syrian President Al-Assad as part of a delegation of speakers of several Arab parliaments to express solidarity with the Syrian people following the earthquake.

This visit was the first of its kind for an Arab parliamentary delegation to Syria in two decades.

"The visit comes to show solidarity with the Syrian people and express support after the disastrous earthquake which hit the country on 6 February," said El-Gebaly in Damascus.

"Egypt in particular has historic relations with Syria. I am here in Damascus to convey a message that we all support the great and steadfast Syrian people and wish them all prosperity and welfare," El-Gebaly added.

On the day that the earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi phoned his Syrian counterpart Al-Assad to express condolences over the victims of the calamity and affirm that Cairo would provide all needed humanitarian aid.
